Hi Eddie,

Thanks so much for the email! I would love to help with this. I will brainstorm ideas and email you back soon!!

Alsoo, I got an A in Chem 17 with a B+ on my final!!! I truly cannot express my gratitude for your help this semester. You were really my teacher this semester and I can’t thank you enough. The way you explained concepts and made me feel like I could really understand it was so amazing.

Thank you SOSO much for everything.

Have a great holiday week,

Dear Eddie,

I hope you’ve enjoyed some time off over winter break! I’m writing to thank you again for all your help in the fall. I’m happy to say that I earned an A in Chem 17, and it’s in a very large part thanks to you! Your consistent energy and dedication to your students is unlike anything I’ve experienced before at Harvard. Thank you for all your hard work!

I’m also writing to congratulate you on becoming the head TF for Chemistry 20. I checked your website recently and learned of the good news. I can’t begin to express how excited I am for you and your students!!

Let’s keep in touch! See you soon.

Subject: Thank you!

Hi Eddie,

Happy holidays Eddie! Now that the semester is officially over, I’d like to thank you again for being easily the best TF I have had at Harvard. Without you, I doubt I could have done nearly as well in a class as difficult as this one. Like I said earlier, being a first-year TF, I tried to model the way I TF after you, since I felt that you had such a passion for orgo and put so much effort into teaching our class.

Thanks so much,

A. J.

Hey Eddie,

I just wanted to say thank you for a great semester in Chem 17! I think I did very well on the final, and I can honestly say that I would not have done as well this semester if I did not have you as my TF. You are far and away the best TF that I have ever had at Harvard, and I have had some excellent TFs. Good luck to you in all of your future endeavors. Thanks for everything!

We did it Eddie!!! Again, thank you so much for all of your help this past semester! I couldn’t have done it without you! You and this class have helped me to make the decision to switch out of biology and major in chemistry. Thanks man!

I have loved having you as a TF. In the future, I hope I can always count on you as a mentor and would love it if I can keep coming to you for advice.

Subject: Thank You!!

Hey Eddie,

How are things now that the semester is over? The final felt like it went really well!! There were a few challenging questions, but nothing we hadn’t seen before. Any who, I wanted to say thank you for all your help this semester. I really appreciated the time and patience you took to teach me all about the concepts of O-Chem. Without you, I wouldn’t have done nearly as well in the course, nor would I have enjoyed it as much. I never expected to like O-Chem, but I think it’s probably one of the coolest subjects I’ve ever taken. Thank you for always being so encouraging and sharing your passion for learning O-Chem, it was truly contagious. It was a real pleasure working with you and getting to know you. I hope to keep in touch 🙂

Happy Holidays!

Subject: Hi

Hi Eddie,

How are you? Hope all is well. It’s been a while since I last emailed you. I just had an exciting phone call from “P” and he also just texted me and said that he texted you with his news. We are so happy with his final grade for organic chemistry. I’ve been praying all semester that he would receive a passing grade.

A “B” in Organic Chemistry, in my eyes is an A++++++++++ !!!!!!!! The stress of waiting for his grade over the holidays has been lifted !!!!! Thank you so much for tutoring him and guiding him though this subject. I can’t tell you enough how much Paul and I appreciated it. “P” has done so well in all his classes but, organic was definitely a challenge for him.

Thanks again, Eddie. Wishing you a beautiful holiday season. Take care.

Sincerely,

Subject: ochem mastery

Hi Eddie!

Thank you for checking in with me! Can I just say how much I admire you as a TF and how grateful I am for all of the energy and effort that you put into teaching us. Thank you, thank you. You have made learning organic chemistry a fun and doable process. I finished the Pset and I also completed all of the practice problems from this week’s handout. I am reviewing the last two weeks of material by redoing the problems on the psets and on the weekly handouts. I’m planning on taking a practice exam today to gauge where I am with my understanding and focus on the areas that need more work. I will be coming to your office hours today, and I do have a few questions, so I’ll see you there!

Dominate O-Chem!!

If someone were to tell me six weeks ago that Summer Ochem at Harvard will be my best learning experience I would not have believed it given the amount of material to learn and the short amount of time to learn them in. But now this is my unequivocal best learning experience ever. Thank you for teaching me the ins and outs of Ochem and giving me this cherished human experience 🙂

I feel so fortunate to have found you as a mentor/guide/tutor for this challenging course. The fact you work so hard means I’m actually working with someone whose service is OChem centric and nothing else. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment to learn OChem in, and most importantly, going through it with your support.

Thank you, Eddie. Your biggest fan 🙂

Hi Eddie,

Thanks for all your help with orgo. I was well prepared for the school year thanks to you and I got more out of the course. This email was sent by my former MIT student to other MIT students about to start their first semester.

Relevant to people taking 5.12 this semester (I know there are a couple of you…and feel free to forward on to friends).

To give context, I’m now a senior and the whole 5.12 experience was initially real rough for me – it took me a good while to figure out what was even going on and how to approach everything, all while it seemed like many people in class had seen the material before. Ultimately I got through both 5.12 and 5.13 (even picked up the occasional A), but looking back, I wish I had wasted less time confused and consequently demoralized about it all.

When I took 5.13 last semester, I got in touch with Eddie, who’s a top-notch orgo tutor. He is not MIT affiliated and does charge a fee, but in my case I found him and his resources very worthwhile. He knows orgo cold, is an extremely dedicated teacher, pleasant and professional. Everyone’s background is different, but if you’re anxious about first exposure, I definitely recommend checking him out.

Happy arrow pushing,

Hi Eddie!

I just wanted to email to thank you once again for all your help in Organic Chemistry. I came out with an A- in orgo (which I was a little bummed about, but you had warned me they didn’t give out many As!). Spring 2014 - Fall 2010

Subject: Thank you again!

Hi Eddie,

Just wanted to check in and say thank you one more time for all your help. My expressions of gratitude may seem excessive, but I know that I could not have succeeded in this orgo course without your help. I am a student who is very reliant on explicit explanations and clear direction. I also had NO experience in retrosynthesis or mechanisms upon entering this course. Anyway, I just found out that i got a 96% on my final and an A in the course. I am so extremely happy to hear this news, given that I got a 70% on my first exam. After seeing that score, I felt so defeated and lost in the course. I feel so blessed to have found such an amazing tutor as yourself and to have had your support and encouragement to try to do better. You were always positive and excited about the material, which helped me to stay engaged and excited too. Thank you SO much again, I am so very grateful as I know that I would never have achieved such a grade without your seminars and guidance.

Enjoy your brief vacation and best of luck!!

Warm wishes,

Subject: ochem

Hi Eddie!

This is Jennifer M., one of your students from Summer of 2013. I hope you enjoyed the holidays! I just wanted to thank you for all of your help and the resources you provided me this past summer. I did very well in the organic chemistry course and received an -A. I got the highest exam grade for both the second and third exam with a 96 on the 2nd exam and a 92 on the third. I actually ended up enjoying Ochem a lot! It was my favorite course and class to study for, I truly appreciate and love organic chemistry. I am considering taking advanced organic chemistry my junior or senior year. I would have not enjoyed ochem or done as well, if I didn’t prepare this past summer with you. Thanks!

Hi Eddie!

I don’t know if you remember me but I was the student in Summer ’11 Harvard O-Chem who insanely attempted to simultaneously work full-time and ace organic chemistry.

Subject: There Is No Substitute for Eddie the OChem Tutor!

Hi Eddie,

I have to say that your tutoring has been instrumental in helping me understand the trial and greatness (yep, I said it) of Organic Chemistry. I walked into our first meeting scarred and beaten from my first and second bouts with OChem only to come back and slay this dragon once and for all.

The study handouts and tips you provided were indispensable to my success. I really hope that anyone who reads this and is able to arrange tutoring with you sees the tremendous yield in confidence gained from actually UNDERSTANDING the material. It’s not so much about making molecules from raw materials, but rather mentally seeing a stepwise process to completion. This is a skill useful in any field, especially medicine.

If I could describe how I felt walking/leaving my OChem 2 final, it would have to be in terms of the first 30 seconds of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”. I actually knew 99% of the material and every mechanism required.

To those on the fence: if organic chemistry is not your forte, then do the smart thing and hire Eddie the OChem Tutor. This is the best investment you will make and I say that as a post-bac professional working 50+hrs/wk going back to school.

Sincerely,

Joe M.

Subject: re: problems & solutions

Hi Eddie,

Thank you for the problems, and for covering so much material these past 2 weeks [winter break intensive tutoring]. It definitely would’ve taken me many late nights to learn all that on my own, and I wouldn’t have understood it even half as well. My original goal was to get a headstart on the quarter (which I definitely have and more, seeing as you covered pretty much all the material), but more importantly I feel like I actually “get” organic chemistry. I used to think it was simply a class I had to (painfully) memorize my way through; now though, I see that understanding/recognizing patterns plays an even bigger role, which makes doing problems actually sort of fun now. It’s a huge load off my shoulders knowing that I won’t have to pull long/all-nighters anymore (at least, not for organic chemistry). I’ll definitely be making use of the endless problems you’ve sent me. Hopefully I’ll be able to see you in March (my break is 3/21-3/31); if not, I hope you have a good year…and hopefully with some vacation time in. And I’ll definitely let you know how things go in class.

Hi Eddie,

I wanted to share some exciting news with you, which is that I got 100% on the o-chem exam! No too long ago, this is something that I would have never even thought was a remote possibility, and I know that my success has been largely due to your tutoring. Subject: final exam

Hi Eddie,

I just got back my grade and I got a 285 out of 300. I am shocked by my grade and am very happy to report that after starting the semester off sluggish, I excelled in exams 2 and 3 and the final and received an A for the class.

I wanted to say thank you and to let you know your seminars and workshops have played major roles in instilling me with knowledge and confidence for the exams…there are numerous tidbits of information that have helped during the exams, from recognizing that when a ring goes from a 5 membered to 6 membered ring, it is usually ozonloysis and aldol….or to your numerous synthesis practice problems that helped me to see numerous trends…even in the Final exam there was a synthesis problem that when working backwards lead you to a structure with 2 carbonyl groups and OETs at the carbonyl, however the starting material asked for a certain number of carbons as the starting material and I recognized right away that I could treat carboxylic acids with ETOH, and H+ to meet the carbon requirements. That stood out to me, because we have done several synthesis problems in your workshop where that was the first stop!!!

Thank you thank you thank you.

If you ever need a reference or anything like that, I will be more than happy to be one….

Hi Eddie,

I wanted to thank you for all your help last semester, as I managed to get an A for the term (I think I just beat the cut-off). I’m hoping to do the same this semester but I know the material will be much more difficult–especially in the mechanism area, so hoping you can help me keep up the good grades.

Best,

Hey Eddie! I got my orgo grade. I ended up with a B. I found the final exam to be extremely hard, so I am very pleased with what I achieved. I wouldn’t have earned that grade if it wasn’t for you. Thank you so much. I am looking forward to acing orgo 2 next semester! Thank you!

Subject: find out your MCAT score yet?

Hi Eddie! I just got my MCAT score, and got 14 on the bio section! Thanks for all your help. Overall, my score was 14 bio, 13 physical, 11 verbal, and perfect T on written 🙂 I am now scrambling to submit my secondaries as soon as I can. I have to say that your help has been just amazing. You really showed me how all of basics of organic chemistry can be simplified to a few core concepts, how to think through problems, and how to focus on memorizing only key features that enhance problem solving abilities. It was great working with you, and there is no doubt that my 14 score on bio could not have happened without your coaching in ochem! Thanks.

Subject: progress!

Hey Eddie!

I just took Exam 10 of the AAMC exams…and I rocked every ochem question on it! Of course, I’m going to continue to practice until the day of my test, as there are areas in which I’m still shaky…but some of the questions I had literally addressed stuff you helped me with yesterday. I felt like I had you inside my head…haha 🙂 My overall score was a 34…my 3rd 34 to date! And I had my highest score on the bio section yet (13).

Anyway, just thought you’d like to know that I’m improving as a direct result of your help.

Thank you SO much!

Hi Eddie,

I just wanted to say thanks for all your help this semester. I ended up with a B+ for the course which I was really pleased with. You made this class so much more manageable….I would not have done as well without your help. In terms of orgo material, I also feel much more confident going into my MCAT studying this summer. Thanks again for all your help!

Hey Eddie,

Someone may have topped 293, but it wasn’t me. I scored 281/300 (highest in section) and received an A for the course. NaOMe was not my only mistake, but not bad!!! I take some pride in the fact I never scored below 90% in e2a or e2b. Many thanks to you, once again!

All the best,

Eddie,

I wanted to thank you for your immense help this past year in organic chemistry. I couldn’t have done it without you. I hope you have a great summer and continue to enlighten orgo students for years to come.

Hi Eddie,

I don’t think I had the chance to thank you properly. You’ve really been a big help this year, and I don’t think I would have made it through O Chem without you. It’s been a really tough year, and I’m happy to be finished with Orgo:) If you ever need a reference for students thinking about tutoring, feel free to give them my email!

Thanks again!

Have a great summer. Take a vacation! You probably need one as much as me.

Hi Eddie,

Thank you very much for your kind words. I was a bit nervous about the third Organic Chemistry midterm two weeks before the exam, but I walked into the test with confidence due to your seminars. Thank you very much for inviting me, and my friends told me that they really enjoyed it. Thank you very much for your time and I hope to meet privately with you before the final for Organic Chemistry.

Also, I did well on the exam and I owe a lot of my confidence and my performance to your seminars.

Thank you,

Subject: Re: Almost ready for my exam

Hi Eddie,

Sorry for the long delay. I just checked out my final grade on Friday night and you’ll be happy to learn that I got a B as my final grade. Usually a B stands for “bad” but this B feels like an A+. I just wanted to thank you for all your help. I can honestly say that I would have failed this class without you. Thanks for your patience and convenient shortcuts – they paid off in the end! Also, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate Organic Chemistry because of you. It’s still not fun, but I can understand why it is so important. I thought it only had torture value, but really it has given me a firm foundation for the material I’m learning about in nursing school.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Please keep up the good work because you do make a great difference in many people’s lives!

Hi Eddie,
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your summer! Sorry it took us so long to write you this email! We both wanted to let you know how appreciative we are for all of your help during the summer session. Thank you for being so flexible with scheduling, understanding with our frustrations, and so helpful with all of our questions. You truly made a huge impact on both of our grades and we would not have been able to be so successful without your help!! You helped us achieve both of our goals and for that we are truly grateful!!!! We hope you have as much fun with your future students as you did with us! We will never forget you!!! Thanks again Eddie and we can’t wait to see you around tutoring those future students that need help taking out the O-Chem trash!

Sincerely,

Hi Eddie:

How are you doing?

I received an A- in my orgo course. I am very satisfied although an A would have been better. But I learned a lot and your help was tremendous. Thank-you very much. Eddie:

Hey there, I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for all your help this summer. I wound up with an A in Orgo III, so that means I got an A, B+, and an A for the three different sections. I’m really happy with that result and I have no doubt that I couldn’t have done that well without your help and inspiration. I hope you are able to enjoy a little down time at some point, and if I get wind of anyone in need of help with organic, I will certainly refer them to you!

Thanks again, and good luck with the fall semester!

Subject: are you back?

Eddie, we did it! Your well-honed skills and guidance have navigated me to the promised land — a 292/300 (97%) on the final and an A in Orgo II! It was a tough fight, thanks for being in my corner. Your teaching, encouragement, and patience made the difference. Now, on to the MCAT!

Are you still on vacation in CA? Hopefully you had some serious R & R time, and are recharged to re-enter the fray.

Let me know when you’re back, we should meet up for some MCAT Orgo.

Subject: The final results

Hi Eddie,

I am happy to report to you about my completely owning the final exam on Friday- my raw score was a 100! And so I ended off my Organic Chem experience with an A, which makes me immensely joyous indeed! Thank you again Eddie for your helping me throughout this year, to get me from basically not having a passing grade in the class on the very first exam last semester, to now, finally acing the course! I’m applying to med schools this summer, so the stakes were pretty high with this class, and it is huge relief to have succeeded in it. I wouldn’t have been able to pull it off nearly this well without your tutoring, and just wanted to let you know of the great impact it has had on my studies! I hope that you enjoy your summer, and hopefully I will see you around the Tufts campus next year as you tend to the next batch of Orgo students! Thanks so much again and take care!

Hi Eddie,

I hope that you’ve enjoyed your week. Thank you for your kind words – I feel it’s only fair that I keep up my part of the bargain by studying/coming to tutoring consistently and whatnot when you are always ready and enthusiastic to answer any and all of my questions on the material, so thank you for YOUR great work! It definitely shows in my grades, and I appreciate your clear explanations of some very tricky concepts, as well as the extra efforts you put in to provide us with lots of practice problems . . .

Subject: Re: How did the exam go?

Hi Eddie,

The grades have just been posted, and yes, you could say that I made mincemeat out of yesterday’s exam! The average was in the 70s, and I got a 95! I still think that it was a very challenging exam, but doing lots of extra mechanism problems was incredibly helpful, because by the time I got to the ones on the exam, figuring those out was almost like second nature. So, as always, thank you for all of your help with understanding and practicing the material! 🙂

Hi Eddie:

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I don’t know if you remember me, but I was in your (MCAT review course) Ochem class at BU. I wanted to let you know that I was accepted to medical school, and am very excited. Subject: Yay!

Eddie,

Hi there! I hope that you’ve had a good week. I certainly have! I took my final last friday and I got a 79%!!! The average was a 52%. I didn’t think it was too tough, so I was pretty excited about my grade!

Today, final grades for the term were posted…and I don’t know if you’ll believe me but I got an A! haha, I was so incredibly excited when I saw the grade! The course ended up being scaled by about 15 points, (I really had something like a 78% average), but I don’t even care! I was so excited, and you really helped me to understand the things we were learning and I DEFINITELY could not have gotten an A without your help! (In other words, I’m going to need you again next semester, hehe)

Have a wonderful holiday season and thanks again! I’ll e-mail you sometime in January about setting up our next meeting for O-Chem 2. Bye! 🙂

Subject: Test!

Eddie,

Did you have a good Thanksgiving? I hope so! I did. I went home to Oklahoma and was there from Monday until just a few hours ago. It was nice to stop home!

I got the grade back for my third test. I got an 81!!! I was so extremely excited. The average for the class was a 51%, so I’m guessing that I scored among the highest in the class [note: it did turn out to be the highest score in the class]. I was so happy when I got my grade, but I got caught up with all of the holiday celebrations so I am just now checking my e-mail! I just wanted to let you know the good news!

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got my midterm grade back and I received a 195/200 (98%)!!!!!! I am sorry for being obnoxious with all the exclamation marks, but I cannot hide the elation I feel right now. Thank you so much Eddie for all of the help and encouragement that you have given. You have refocused the contempt and anxiety that I was feeling in the beginning toward orgo into confidence and affinity for this highly multifaceted subject. I laced up those stomping boots and showed some authority! I will savor this one, but realize there is a lot of work left to do. Have a great weekend Eddie.

Thank you so much for all of your help with Orgo! The last exam went well. I got an 86.5… I am not sure if that ended up being an A or an A- with the curve.
